| Blindly defending Bush costs lives | 01:57 am |
|---|
This is a letter to the editor in the local paper in which someone was responding to letter which had critiqued Bush’s use of domestic spying in order to ‘prevent terrorism’. Upon reading this, I responded and was published.
Efforts directed at terrorists
With professors like Wayne C. Bartee, it is clear that to study history at Missouri State University would be an exercise in futility. He can't even get recent history correct. How can he be expect to get any history correct?
President Bush has not been spying on "U.S. citizens." The "spying" has been directed at incoming international communication with people known to have connections to al-Qaida. This is precisely what he has been accused of not doing prior to 9/11. He has been accused of "not connecting the dots" before 9/11. Now they don't want him to see the dots, much less connect them.
Is your hatred for him such that you would rather put this country in danger of another attack rather than give him credit for trying to protect us?
To refresh your memory, kings never had to explain their actions. They just did as they pleased. After all, who could challenge the king and live to tell about it?

And my response:
Blindly defending Bush costs lives
James Webb, in Jan. 2nds 'Efforts directed at terrorists' poses the question, "Is your hatred for (Bush) such that you would rather put this country in danger of another attack…" I ask: 'is his loyalty to Bush so blind that he would defend draconian tactics and shout down any questioning of the legality of actions this administration takes, even in regards to curtailing liberty & expanding government intrusion?' Apparently this is so for many Republican apologists.
Far too many so called ‘freedom loving’ Americans are more than willing to consent to whatever tactics the administration dubs necessary for ‘national security’. They will argue wholeheartedly before any serious debate has occurred, even likening mere speculation and the publicizing of these issues to that of treason. They even have the nerve to doggedly defend their recklessness as a sign of true patriotism.
In an effort to preserve freedom & democracy we are instead destroying them when we write a blank check for every price, give a nod to every power our leaders seek. Especially when done without first considering at great care how legitimate, long-term, and wise these changes really are.
The rush to so readily defend every measure Bush lauds as necessary is compromising our greatest ideals and has added to a needless loss of life.
